Facade systems

In the first post about facade insulation, we wrote a little about the initial phases before the facade system has to be installed. Now we have reached assembly and completion. With the current customer, a system from Sto Danmark A/S has been chosen. Sto Danmark A/S is a supplier of building materials and supplies products and system solutions within facades, interiors and acoustics as well as concrete and flooring. They also have a pretty good sustainable profile.

Pros and cons

The system we have used on this project is called Sto 50 mm Resol. The system is essentially facade panels of 50 mm that are mounted on the outer walls. The advantage of this facade board is, among other things, that it does not take up much space, but insulates equivalent to a 100 mm facade board. This means that you can maintain the position of your windows. Normally, one would have to move one’s windows further out into the rebate (window hole) with some special brackets, in order to create a harmonious expression on the facade. This also means that a lot of extra work must be done inside one’s home, as the seams inside must also be made so that a nice finish is achieved. All that is avoided when, as in this case, you use a Sto 50 mm Resol system.

Installation of facade insulation

It is a simple system and the facade panels are mounted with an adhesive and plugs. The boards are installed so that they have staggered joints and corner and bottom rails are installed to strengthen the ends of the boards. Nets and building layers of different adhesives with different properties are applied. Finally, the whole thing is plastered with a final layer of filler/plaster, which gives the final finish.

Facade system for wood

If you have wooden extensions, there are also solutions for that. Special facade panels (Sto Ventec) can be fitted, which are a plaster support panel made of glass granules. Those boards do not in themselves have any insulation value, but are boards on which you can apply the same final product as on the rest of the facade system – i.e. final plaster. It creates uniformity and gives the house the same harmonious look all around.

Professional advice secures your investment

There are, of course, a lot of technical elements associated with facade insulation in the form of vapor barriers, thermal bridges, ventilation, etc. It is therefore a very good idea to get some professional advice before embarking on a do-it-yourself project. This ensures that you get the best imaginable insulation and that your investment actually pays off.
