Save money on your heating bill

Now it’s finally summer and it might not be the right time to think about insulating the facade of your house. But insulating the facade is an initiative that is very up to date, because there is a lot of money to be saved on the heating bill if your house is well insulated. You get a significantly better indoor climate and it is also really good for the environment. Of course, it has a price, but it is a very good investment in the long run. There are many types of insulation and in this post we will give you a brief introduction to facade insulation.

Facade systems

We are installing facade insulation on a villa in Charlottenlund. The customer has a rather high heating bill, which of course can be caused by many things. Eg. that it is a large family that lives in the house – ergo a large consumption. In this case, it is a large family in a house that is rather poorly insulated. Insufficient ceiling insulation, uninsulated extensions and poorly insulated external walls.

First step:
  • We start by going through the facades: Structural damage is repaired. Bad joints are scraped out and re-grouted. Loose plaster and paint are cleaned down . The house must have a proper base so that it is ready for the facade system.
  • In this house there is a problem with rising damp in the outer walls in some places. We have chosen to use a plinth-stop system. In its simplicity, it means that you drill holes every 10 cm. all the way around the house along the plinth. You drill in so that you are approx. 2-3 cm. for interior walls. The holes are cleaned out and a liquid is then introduced. The liquid distributes and dries up into a solid unit, which ensures that the rising moisture does not continue up the walls.
  • In this case, we also knocked down the plinth, as it was bricked up and not cast in concrete.

A post like this can easily get a bit technical, but we are just trying to provide information on which steps are necessary when insulating the facade. You cannot (unfortunately) simply install a new facade system on a house that needs thorough facade renovation. There must be a reasonable starting point to achieve a good result.

In part 2 on facade insulation, we will get more into the facade system itself, as there are many facade systems on the market. The one chosen for this case has some really good properties, which we will get into in more detail

Stay tuned!
